No need to buy ahead unless you're going at a peak time. Even then I didn't see anyone turned away.
We purchased our tickets online and their are also ticket purchasing at admissions. No lines and we had also booked reservations for dinner on OpenTable for the restaurant at the aquarium and we had actually no issues on getting in earlier than our previous reservation.

You can buy tickets online or at the counter. Buying tickets online saves you NO time at all.
You can just walk in and buy tickets.
