This place (Since 1928) proposed to conserve endangered species and educate the community, Hoyt Arboretum encompasses 190 ridge-top acres and 12 miles of hiking trails just minutes from downtown Portland. Home to 2,300 species of trees and shrubs from six continents, Hoyt Arboretum is a place to contemplate for a relaxing and serenity moment. You can join Washington park and see the Rose Garden and play tennis !

Beautiful natural oasis close to the city. Entry is free and you only pay for parking if visiting by car, which is $2 an hour or $8 max a day. We walked the redwood trail which takes about an hour and only went back to the car because it started to rain. Highly recommend this trail as the enormous trees are awe inspiring.

beautiful area. lots of trails with clear signage -- from a 30 min loop to a 2 hour loop, there's something for everyone. the area we parked in didn't have many spots, but we were able to find parking easily due to it being a wednesday morning.

Folks should know that the trails are easy to walk (lots of small hills and valleys) and that this "living tree museum" is designed to provide color and interest in all seasons (for winter it's holly berries and camellias; in the spring the magnolia blossoms are incredibly showy). Make sure you stop and take time to explore/look around: I thought a tree had been carved into and my husband pointed out that it was insect activity - so cool. And, you can park pretty much anywhere in the park - but obey the signs and leave ZERO that's valuable in your car Thieves are pretty common and they've smashed windows even in crowded spaces, so just beware so that you can enjoy yourselves.

Questions & Answers

Are pets allowed?

SU | Aug 18, 2019

From website: City law requires dog owners to keep their dog(s) on a leash at all times while in the park. There are no off-leash areas in Hoyt Arboretum. Dog owners are required to pick up and dispose of their dog’s waste each and every time. The purpose of the leash law is to ensure that dogs are kept under control for the safety and enjoyment of all park visitors and to protect the park’s environment, trails and wildlife. If you are planning to bring your dog, please read our Dog Policy in the sidebar.

What's the parking fee?

S R | Aug 18, 2019
David Boe | Aug 17, 2020

Parking is the same rate as in downtown: $2 per hour. The arboretum currently (March, 2020) has a mix of free and paid parking. There are two paid lots directly adjacent to the Visitor Center, on either side of Fairview Blvd. There are also a number of free spaces along Fairview Blvd itself, as it passes in front of the Visitor Center. These spaces are often full, especially in nice weather, but turn over fairly frequently. Additionally, there are several pull-out spots within the park itself, along Fischer Lane, as well as near the Winter Garden, along SW Cascade Lane. These locations can be hard to find, however; especially the small Winter Garden parking area, which holds a maximum of 4 cars.

Karen Scott | Aug 17, 2021

There are definitely barred owls and great horned owls at Hoyt. I'm not sure about smaller owls - large owls will hunt them, so even if they are there you probably won't see them.

If I bike, is there anywhere secure to park it and walk around?

There are some picnic benches that you could probably secure your bike to, but I didn't see any designated bike stands when I went there.

When is the best time in the year to come visit?

Olga Chiper | Aug 18, 2019
Hoyt Arboretum | Aug 17, 2020

Every season has its own charm, so you really can't choose a bad time to visit. SPRING: Definitely visit our Magnolia Trail, which explodes with some stellar blooms and fragrances from March all the way through late summer. SUMMER: Take advantage of the shade on the Creek Trail and under the redwoods near our Redwood Deck. AUTUMN: The entire Arboretum is gorgeous and fragrant at this time of year, but the best trails at that time are the Maple Trail and the Overlook trail to really see the fall colors. WINTER: THE time to see the Winter Garden (near the intersection of the Wildwood Trail and Cascade Drive). Hope this helps!
