Try to walk a mile a day, knee was shattered four years ago, it helps. Even though it is unbelievable dry brush, what makes up for it is other scenery, cliffs rock formations, it's still a beautiful walk. The forest are closed until relief from mother nature.

February 8 hiking about 1.8 miles, an hour, from Battleship Rock into McCauley springs. Pleasant but ice cleats, Trax, would have made it safer on sometimes icy trails. Not many people on a Sunday. Dog friendly. Hot springs maybe easier to find with trail through snow. But did not see the trail I thought would go to Jemez Campground. Three ponds. Water not horribly hot but comfortable in the snow.

If it's a national forest -- it always deserves 5 stars. Vast grasslands (less so forests) open for all to explore. You can camp here for free, too, just be sure to leave no trace. On occasion you may run into cows gracing on the land. But, overall, very peaceful. Unfortunately, the very first stretch of the entrance has suffered of some trash (furniture mainly) being dumped here. The dirt roads are not maintained, so be prepared for a bumpy drive. Hence, minus one star.

We spent Memorial day weekend in the Jemez mountains. For people who don't own property in the mountains, there are many different camp site locations. For RV's, for backpacking, or for glampimg, there's plenty of space for everyone. It's quiet and peaceful, but not too out of the way for a quick vacation away from the city.

Open year round...the rate is not dependent on NM residency as it is a National Forest....not sure cost for seniors per yr. Time limit at each camp ground is 14 days but one can move to a different camp ground after that and time limit starts over.
To my knowledge, the only place the residency restriction is in effect is at established campsites maintained by the forest service.

Excluding some developed areas with fees, Its free to camp in pretty much every national forest, including SFNF. just follow the rules, dont light the forest on fire, and dont litter. And dont forget TP
You do not need a day pass to access Santa Fe National Forest, trailheads are free 🙂 enjoy!
BLM dispersed camping. Beautiful
I don't think so, it is gated and locked in wintertime.
Go straight thru the town. I know what road you are talking about. It will only get worse. That's if your going thru pecos.
Both paved and Dirt when you get up there you will see most of the areas that you want to go camping are dirt roads but the campsites are also dirt but kept up
Off the beaten path, probably not unless the mildest pull off from a road. Otherwise, campgrounds are currently closed last I checked.
There are. I don't know how full they are. I think the epidemic has them at no more than half capacity right now.
Absolutely
Some parts do, depends where you go. It's best to stop at the local national forest office. It's a large National Forest, so it's hard to answer your question properly.
Yes u can use a generator. No got to find ur own spot. Good place to camp road 376.
Not sure if by fire but I assume it was an old wagon trail days term which referred to how fast it took to get to Santa fe using that area rather than through the pojoaque route to Santa fe before there even was a highway. But to be honest I don't think it's because of a forest fire or that sort of reference.
No charge or parking permit needed - enjoy!
Hello, I'm not sure if there is camping sites in Truchas, I believe if you Google, (Truchas) they might be able to help.
Usually but not now because the forest is closed due to fire danger. Always check the national Forest website or call a ranger station. They are super helpful.
Yes. Santa Fe county has a burn ban in place
Wow! I've never been there either we have so much in common. Are you single?
I know that up in Hyde Park, there are 3 venues that would work for you. Perfect for a family reunion. Call Santa Ge Jeep Tours... They can point you in the right direction.
