This ride was absolutely amazing. I've never seen a place so beautiful in my life. You'll ride through train tunnels, bridges, and historical sites. The scenery was unlike anything I've seen in my life. The whole 13 mile ride can be done without breaking a sweat. It's all on a very slight down hill trail. Bring a small pump just in case. Someone had a flat in the middle of the trail. It was quite a while before I saw some help driving up to her. It's very clean, meaning I didn't see any trash along the trail. Do your part to keep it clean, take out your trash.

The trail and views are incredible. Definitely worth the money and the time. Unfortunately, the customer service and bike rentals were subpar. The bikes were well worn and my husband’s bike seat broke a few miles into the ride. We rode back so they could fix it, but they did a poor repair job and the bike broke again a few miles in. The workers acted annoyed by our questions and rushed through how the process works. The views made it worth it, but there were disappointing parts.

Rode the Hiawatha Trail today and we were completely blown away by the stunning beauty seen on the trail. Definitely a must-do trip for those that love outdoor activities! We rented bikes from Lookout Pass and we were a little worried before getting there because we had read so many negative reviews online about the poor quality of the bikes. Our experience was really good. The quality of the bikes were just fine. The worst thing I could say about them is that the brakes squeaked a little and the gears were somewhat stiff, but we had no issues at all with the four rental bikes in our group. Overall we had a fantastic day. I would highly recommend going on this trail!

The Hiawatha is a must-visit destination where young and old can enjoy an easy 15-mile bike ride while enjoying nature. Between the handful of tunnels and bridges, you can get off your bike and simply soak in the sight, sound, and smell of the great outdoor. The route starting from East Portal is a slight decline and so, you can let gravity do most of the work as you cruise along well-packed gravel path. There is a paid shuttle service at the end of the route which will take you back to the starting point. The only minus to the overall experience is the unnecesary lo g wait time for the shuttle. We waited almost 30 mins. However, you can also ride back for a good workout.

Don't bring a road bike. The trail is pretty gravely. My husband's carbon frame cracked. Your own Mountain Bike is great.
The bikes can be rented. They are thirty. They then charge 25$ for them to take them to the trailhead. The bikes are dirty, but they worked. They have professional seats on them which are not comfortable for us normal riders.
Yes, i saw some ebikes on the trail. Limited speed...
Do not recommend road bike - my tires punctured first time because of gravel and had a friend whose frame cracked
Yes. You can hike it if you prefer rather than riding a bike. You'll still have to get the day use permit.
Yes they do.
It's $15 day use pass another $12 if you want to ride the shuttle back (adult prices). The trail is 15 miles long. Downhill. 10 tunnels & 7 trusses or vice versa. The longest tunnel is almost 2 miles long (at beginning) they have volunteers riding the trail all day long to help anyone if needed. Well marked and plenty of info boards about the train/history. Tickets are on line, at look out pass or at trailhead. Only 2 miles from I90 on the Montana/ Idaho boarder.
yes!
Only one place. If they can't do it you won't be left behind. They have your guides that will make sure that you make it to the busses. If you are worried about not making it rent an electric assist bike. While it is downhill you are still peddling a lot so be prepared.
Gravel and some packed dirt.
Its not good today. It has been clear all week but today the smoke just rolled in.
Depends on the time and energy you have, we recently did the last 10 miles and used our own vehicles to shuttle... took more time and we missed out on the 1.5 mile initial tunnel, but the last 10 miles are way more scenic, we saved a lot of $$. You have to have a very powerful light for the long tunnel, which we didn't have, and we arrived too late in the day for the shuttle to work for us. Warning, the road over the pass to the other side of the initial tunnel is a rough steep road, not the best for a car... it was fine in pickup trucks with 4x4. You can also drive the remainder of the Hiawatha trail to Avery and return via St Mary, which a beautiful drive.
From last year on their website: The trail is open from 8:30 AM to 5 PM (PDT) daily starting May 24 through September 22, 2019. so they open in may-june, but would depend on winter snowfall.
Until September 22.
Plan on another hour in case there is a line for the shuttle.
You can purchase everything ahead of time on-line. It's easy and convenient. But you can also purchase the pass at the ski lodge or at the trail. I imagine it would be busy on labor day weekend as it's a very popular (and fun!) Place to be for riding.
Yes to the riding. And yes to the shuttle back. They have a large enclosed trailer to put over sized bikes in
Yes! But as long as you don't go fast, it's no issue. I went last Saturday and we saw SO many people who had mud trailed up their backs. We had four in our group and none of us had any mud on us except for near our feet.
I suppose, but you would still need lights and such for the tunnel. A 1.6 mile walk in a cold dark tunnel may not be ideal. The entire trail is about 15 miles.
yes. I saw quite a few people riding those.
Well we stayed in a campground before we got into Wallace. Sorry I can't remember the name as your yravelling fron Coeur d'Alene Idaho it is on your left hand side. Lot of room
For biking, believe it is end of May through September, however, early and late in the season is weekends only. www.ridethehiawatha.com
