TRS= Trashy Retirement Company, they will send you nonstop letters and take upwards $600 extra from your paycheck, per month to pay for “deficits” in your retirement account that were not your fault but were the fault of the person in charge of payroll at your job. These tactics that they use to “catch you up” are not only harsh but almost criminal. They are very disorganized and it is hard to reach anyone by phone. This is one of the companies that makes educators want to transition to other careers, where their money isn’t played with. Disgusting company.

I've had to withdraw money due to unforseen emergency, it was time sensitive. By the time I received MY money from TRS I was overdue on my payment, costing me thousands. Now I'm stuck paying back my TRS withdrawal and my overdue fees. The 5-star review is fake and should be taken down

Make sure you double and triple check information received. Representatives copy and paste responses from the website and those responses may be related to an entirely different issue, or flat out wrong. I have been given the run around for months now and finally made progress after copying and pasting the right responses from the website and asking for additional support.

Initially, when I went to file for retirement disability, the process went smoothly. A processor, Mrs. Duncan, helped me. She was awesome. She did her job with intake. That was 2/2/22; It is now 9/29/22 and I’ve heard nothing from the medical board. I have been in-person, since but NOTHING. I’ve seen nothing in my emails. There are many complaints, regarding the process to retire and how long turnover takes. I cannot believe that this is what our UFT signed it’s members up for. I have to keep praying. Sincerely, Crystal

It varies, but I retired Dec 2017 and received my correct pension April 2018 which is four months. Please note that all of my buyback time was calculated and bought just before I filed my retirement papers. So, there were no complications, just the calculation of the pension. Now that I think about it, it may be that the buyback has to be paid beforehand. So, this perhaps didn't need to be mentioned. Ok, I updated this with info from trsnyc.org: TRS must receive any claim for prior service credit before your retirement date. However, claiming and purchasing prior service credit sooner rather than later would prevent additional interest from accruing and increasing the cost. So, it seems one can purchase any claimed prior service after the retirement date, but this would prolong the time for receiving the final pension.
No
Can I just walk in and sit and speak with a representative
There is a brochure for each tier that gives specific, detailed instructions on how to calculate your retirement pay. It's good information to know. If you don't want to do the calculations, as Marisol mentioned, the UFT is your best bet.
It’s not automatic. You would need to fill out paperwork authorizing the transfer.
By filing a W-4P form. You can request a form or file online by logging on your TRS account. The W-4P online is under payments.
He needs to go into the office at 55 Water Street with documentation that he can make these decisions for her and bring the bank information with him. Maybe power of attorney, etc that gives him access to her pension.
That check should have been received by the last school you worked in. Contact the payroll secretary as she can check the system.
It is listed on your check / stub or by accessing payroll portal OR asking your payroll secretary who can view it on payroll system.
You can print it out on TRS website under payments. You can print the entire table out with dates and deductions, etc
Contact trsnyc.org and find out HR under contact.
The OP44 form is filed with the DOE by your Payroll Secretary.
Only if you work till 62 will your contributions be returned.

I am so sorry to hear that you were assaulted. I hope the proper documentation of the assault was recorded. You may put in for retirement at any time. Are you of retirement age? Will you receive your social security? Do you have a pension? Are you applying for disability? What is your financial plan after you retire? How will you support yourself? These are questions to ask yourself to ensure that you have a comfortable retirement. Good luck to you.
You will receive your 2022 RMD estimates and form within the next week or so. The RMD is also available on the TRS website.
It will automatically stop once you have reached the maximum. They will send you notification of it.

You'd have to call the call center and get the proper forms to make that change.
You have to call the call center and make a request for it.
I believe you're correct. While money is contributed on your behalf from the City, the pension itself is not a City pension. From https://www.trsnyc.org/memberportal/About-Us/benefitsSummary TRS' Qualified Pension Plan (QPP) is a retirement plan administered under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our members' employers contribute the amount required to meet TRS' pension benefit obligation. And, in order to help fund their retirement allowances, members must also contribute to their QPP account.
If I remember correctly, this is the date for which your payoff is calculated. On the back of the paper, you must choose a plan. If you don't choose by the indicated date, a new prior service amount has to be calculated. Try to choose a plan and follow it on that first round! The subsequent recalculation is higher to adjust for the interest that should have accrued, and it seems to take a long time to receive a recalculation. Years, in fact!
Please realize the information is somewhat different for the different tiers. So please research your particular tier. In general, one can retire after achieving only 10 years of service, i.e. vested, but must be at least 55 years of age. Also, unless one has at least 30 years of service, or is at least age 62, the pension will be reduced by a scaled age factor for ages 55-61. There are brochures, in PDFs, on the website trsnyc.org for each particular tier. All the best!
55 water street is open Whereas you can drop off information...leave your Phone number and email address...u could drop off A letter regarding your concerns..make your u include your Trs account no. They will respond within two days
Actually, it isn't with TRS. It's with your health plan, or possibly NYC but a different office than for active employees. The website below has lots of good information including a section entitled, "Who do I contact after retiring?" https://www1.nyc.gov/site/olr/health/retiree/health-retiree-responsibilities-assistance.page Hope this helped.
You can access the form by visiting theTRS web site trsnyc.org (BK58, EFT Authorization form).
Yes you can
Currently, TRS does not have knowledge sessions at the schools. From time to time, TRS staff attends UFT meetings where questions are answered. Also, TRS hold its own seminars throughout the year at their location in downtown Manhattan.
Look on your pay stub, if your active, under pension number. Top left of your pay stub there should be a six digit number. It begins with 00T...
You can make your election on the secure section of the TRS website, or you may file a “Withholding Certificate for Pension or Annuity Payments” (W-4P) with TRS. Using the member portal is always the best way to transact with TRS.
You can take up to 75% of your MCAF at retirement. It does NOT have to be invested. There will be a 20% Federal tax withholding, no penalty. Also, taking from your MCAF at retirement will reduce your pension for the rest of your life.
If you are age 65, your earnings after retirement are unrestricted. If under age 65, the cap is $35K in a calendar year requiring a 212 waiver to be filed each calendar year until the year you turn 65.
After you retire you can apply for restoration of service.
By the 2 train you have to get off at Wall Street. The 4 or 5 train you will get off at Bowling Green Station
Simply log into TRS website and change your rate. You can also request a cost letter to buy back time via the TRS website.
Kevin, it would be the best to call TRS hotline for that, my guess is that it depends if you are retired, and some other circumstances
If you are currently working, log into payroll portal and print it out
Call their call center, they will answer your questions
No you can not
Never give out your social security number. I’m sure TRS would never email you asking for it either as they have it in your profile.
You can submit a request for a loan via the TRS website. Log in or create an account
No. You have to designate who you want to be your beneficiary. There are many options. Go to one of their retirement workshops.
Call them and ask then to track the check.
Log into your TRS account. You should be able to apply online. If not there should be a link to print out TDA form. Your TDA Max contribution rate will be listed in your online account info.

NYSUT stands for New York State United Teachers. MBT refers to member benefits. You would need to contact NYSUT directly regarding the increase deduction.
