I am glad sanitation trucks are taking large objects, without appointment, on pick up day. I just wish the sanitation workers had a means to pick up trash that falls into the street while doing their pick ups. A broom and shovel perhaps?

I’ve just been notified that I have to compost my garbage. As of this time, I have 3 pails in my kitchen. 1 is for paper, 2 is for glass, tin and aluminum, 3 is for regular trash. #2 has to be rinsed . Fine. But I have to pay for the water to rinse my garbage. Now I need a 4th pail. I have nowhere to keep another pail. I’ve been very vigilant about recycling, but it’s getting to be too much. Is there going to be a penalty for not composting? I’m 82 years old and have to drag out all these pails to the curb. When is it going to be enough?

Hard working people.

Lazy sanitation workers. Came today to pick up the garbage across my street 84-18 102 Road. Dump and leave garbage on the middle of the road and kept going. Supervisor passed by and doesn't reported. Now I have garbage all over the middle of my street. The good sanitation workers are NOT there any more. They used to have a shovel and a broom to pick up any garbage on the street.

NY Sanitation has a distinct procedure that must be followed for pick up. You can call to schedule one or go online and request the service. They will give a day to put it out curbside. The door MUST be removed first or you will receive a summons because of the potential danger. Out it outside on the day you're given and someone will come by and remove all the gas from the tank. He will place a sticker on it signalling the regular pick up guys that it's safe to sislise of it. Keep the appointment date and number they give you, so you're not ticketed if they fail to come by.

It depends on what type of "gas" you're referring to. Helium canisters can be put in with your recycling as long as it's empty. Propane canisters cannot be thrown out. You can use the buy-back program where they sell propane and get yourself a new one, or bring it to a DSNY drop off location. Oxygen tanks also cannot be thrown out. If it's medical oxygen bring it to ER/Hospital or to a DSNY drop off site. Gasoline canisters cannot be thrown out if it has gas in it. Bring it to a DSNY drop off site.
No where... you might be able to go to a private dump and pay to dispose of it
Put them in a garbage bag and place it curbside the night before your garbage pick up day
Cooking oil and grease can be placed in a container, like a frozen juice container, a beverage carton, or a take-out container. Label the container “Cooking Oil—Not for Recycling” and discard with regular garbage. Alternately, you can also put cooled cooking oil/grease in a plastic bag and freeze before discarding.
They are about to hire 700 people from the current civil service list.
If it is gas powered make sure gas tank is empty...and put it out on your recycling pick up day. If it is battery powered, please remove battery. Battery may explode when the guys cycle the truck. You may dispose the battery at a battery disposal drop off spot.
As far as I know. NYC Sanitation does not give out the blue recycling receptacle anymore. You can obtain the blue (metal, glass, plastic) or green (un-soiled paper) receptacle stickers and designate any can for recycling from any sanitation garage for free.

Go to this web link https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/dsny/site/contact and select "Organic Bin Replacement Request", this is if your community board is already participating in the organics collection program. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until organics collection is brought to your community board, then you'll be issued the containers, not before.
Cut it up and tie it up...put out with regular garbage.
Just place it out to the curb the night before your recycling day.

Contact 311 to have sanitation first remove the Freon from the unit. They will give you a date range as to when to place the A/C out on the sidewalk. A special van will be dispatched to have the Freon removed. They'll place an orange sticker on the outside of the A/C once this is done. After, you'll just leave it outside and the recycling crew will pick it up on your recycling collection day, once they see the orange sticker on the side of it.

Put it out curbside for recycling
For residential properties only: Place the washing machine curbside after 4pm the day before your schedule recycling day. For safety reasons, remove the door before placing curbside.
Sanitation can't collect firewood and wood from trees growing on residential properties in Brooklyn and Queens due to Asian Longhorned Beetle infestation. Schedule an appointment with Parks & Recreation for free on-site chipping and disposal in designated areas. Branches and tree limbs generated by homeowners can be set out for curbside collection if your home is in a neighborhood that receives DSNY organics collection. All other areas can discard this material as bulk garbage on regular collection days (it can be collected separately in organics collection pilot areas). Branches must be bundled 2 feet by 4 feet or smaller.
In the regular garbage
If it is a mattress in a plastic bag, place it out as a bulk item on regular collection day.
Bring it to safe disposal event, one in each brought, or drop it off at the department's drop-off site. Also one in each borough, look up address on website, or bring it to best buy, staple, goodwill, ganwanus electronic recycling center.
