So much fun! Especially if you have kids! I would 100% opt for the shootout ride if you can swing it! Really fun (especially for the kids again), just make sure you are on the LEFT side of the train (looking up towards the engine when you depart Hill City) so that you are on the correct side to see the shootout. We switched sides on the way back and that was nice to get to see the scenery on both sides (so again, we sat on the LEFT side if your facing the direction the train is going to go, both ways). Gorgeous views of the black hills. The lady narrating was kind of silly and awkward, but the kids loved it!

This is a steam engine train. The ride takes 2 hours round trip.. Bonus ..watch for the dinosaur in the field it may or may not be out there! Saw lots of deer. Lots of historical information while the train is going. Loved this and will be back with family.

This wasn't the most scenic trip, but we enjoyed it anyway. Some cars are prettier than others, I recomend the caboose. You can bring your own refreshments on board, but there are no restrooms. The sell popcorn on the train. The same people have to stop over and over for the train crossing weaving over the road, everyone waves and smiles.

A fun train ride pulled by a steam engine. Very informative guide and friendly staff on board and working the gift shop and museum. A highlight for us was seeing Black Elk Peak. The highest in SD. I would suggest calling ahead to reserve seats if you know you wil be near Hill City or Keystone. The seats fill up fast, especially for larger families or groups. They have the old #7 engine that was used for movies and you'll see that history in the museum. Neat.

No. $29 for roundtrip. $24 for one way.
Tickets may be purchased at the station, but we recommend reservations because our trains do fill up and seats are assigned. If you want to ensure seats together for your party and in the type of car you prefer, reservations are the way to go!
No, Rushmore is on the opposite side of the mountain so you will not see the monument. During the train ride you will hear local history and that of the 1880 Train.
Thanks for your inquiry! The 1880 Train allows Service Animals only on board the train.
There is a group rate for groups larger than 20 passengers.
You will need to arrange for a ride back to your car if you choose the One-Way option. However, a paid shuttle option can be paired with the last Keystone departure of the day during peak summer dates (See schedule for exact dates and details). Shuttle seats are limited and must be reserved via phone 605-574-2222 or in person at the Keystone Depot. Shuttle can not be combined with any other train times.
Thank you for your inquiry! We highly encourage that you reserve your seats before your trip! You can do it online at 1880train.com or give us a call and we can assist you over the phone.
We only allow ADA certified Service Animals onboard the train.
Thank you for your interest in the 1880 Train. We have a standard rate for adults 13 and older of $32.00 round trip.
No they sell to capacity but most cars allow for open air flow
Unfortunately, we will not be doing a fireworks train. Thank you for your interest in the 1880 train.
Yes, we operate numerous Special Events, including a Wine Express. https://www.1880train.com/events.html https://www.1880train.com/wine-express.html
It leaves at various times, depends on if you are starting in keystone or hill city as well.
No but it's better if you do, you get more choice for seating. We got our tickets right before we left and we had to sit in an open car when it was raining.
Yes, we are handicapped accessible! We have a lift we utilize in Hill City and two wheelchair spots available on each ride in our Blue Bird car. In Keystone, the platform is even with the train cars, so no lift it needed.
About 1 hour each way. The train travels slowly so lots of opportunities to enjoy the ride & beautiful scenery
Contact Rick Mills at the South Dakota state railroad museum. It's at the train yard!
Lots, and lots of God's country!! Worth the trip, no regrets :)
The train runs from mid may to mid october and on weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Ride wise , approximately40 min each direction. The length of the train, I think 8 cars. Was an enjoyable experience you & your family will enjoy.
Any food or drink purchased in our depots or at the Highliner Eatery can be enjoyed on the train. No outside food or drink. Meal options include fresh made wraps, salads, sandwiches, and home-made kids meals. Drink options include a variety of soda, teas, sports drinks, and water. A variety of beers and wine can be found at our Hill City depot only.
There is not a discount available.
I would check their website for operatin hours. We road the train last October and it was very enjoyable.
Consult the website.
Restrooms are found at either depot. There are no restrooms on the train.
We will do the ride again, and when we do, we will go from Hill City to Keystone (what we did the first time) and purchase the earliest departure we can on the steam train (which was 10:00, I believe) and plan for at least 4 hours, more if they have later return trips. We planned in a two hour stay in Keystone, but could have easily stayed for several more hours. We didn't stop at the museum, because we were staying in Hill City and thought we would have the chance to go back, but didn't had the time. We should have arrived in time to tour it before our departure. You could probably spend a few hours in Hill City between the museum and the shops downtown, but there is dedinitely more in Keystone.
No bathroom on train but at both depots in hills city and keystone
Pretty much right in front of the location. Edit- At least at the Hill City location, I don't know about the other stop(s).
Yes you should have at minimum 1.5 hours. If you ride after they start a 3 a day run you can catch the first run in the morning and return on the last run. However you will have to make reservation to do that.
It all depends on the season, whether the regular or the Polar.
