We did not, for a round trip we were on the next train to go to hill city. 3 hour wait to come back. Reservations are a good thing to do.
While technically not required, during the busy season the short answer is really yes. This year (2021) especially, since many families are busting put after the Covid quarantine.

It is a better idea to make reservations. You get the side you want going to Keystone and book the other side coming back. That way you get to see as much as possible from both sides of the train.

Your best bet on the weekends is to make reservations. Not required though. Might be sold out
