Went there for the Monarchs and Milkweeds at Merkle event. Bought some native plants from Chesapeake Natives. Got a bunch of free native pollinator-friendly plant seeds.

This is a beautiful, quiet, uncrowded sanctuary. I like to ride my bike from Patuxent River Park over the Mataponi Creek bridge into the Merkle WS, then around the gravel roads, and usually with a stop at the visitor center. The visitor center is very well done and interesting, and the people there are always nice and helpful. There are also some nice hiking trails in the sanctuary. There are rarely many visitors, which is a bit of a mixed bag. Part of its charm is that there are rarely many people there, but it's a shame that more people do not get to enjoy this beautiful place along the Patuxent River.

I never knew this park existed and it was within 15 minutes of me. It's great with the scenery, the trails, and I loved going on my Sierra Club hike/walk. I highly recommend for a naturegoer, nature enthusiast, and park lover!

If you have your own kayak... I've seen one spot along the "driving tour" where you could easily park near the "osprey look out point" then slide your kayak in (no cost) There is a green wooden bench there, right infront of the water.

No. Typically rescue is done by charity volunteers who specialize in a particular species of animal.
