I went for the same around 2 weeks back, and they were not doing vehicle registration at 5000 Hadley Rd. South Plainfield DMV then, due to Covid-19 only a few DMVs are doing it. The nearest one for me was Springfield one. The line there is not too long (compared to DMV standards) and they give out tocken# in the morning to first 200 ppl, and text them about 30 mins in advance of their turn, this is a welcome step from their side.

As of right now the South Plainfield DMV location is only dealing with licenses. Please refer to DMV website to look up vehicle center locations (Springfield is one of those).

They do allow walk-ins, but I highly highly highly recommend scheduling an appointment. They will only allow a certain number of people inside the building at any time, and there is a cutoff time for walk-ins since appointment holders have priority over walk-ins. With public health measures in place, you'll very likely be waiting in line outside for a while, even after your scheduled appointment time, to get served.

You will have to stand in line to come in to make an appointment and then you will have to come back for that appointment.

Yes it was. I had to go to the DMV to get it because I didn’t have a photocopy of my ID. I still filled out the form for a replacement and paid for it online and they said it was going to be mailed to me. Thank you!

They are only a licensing location. You do not need an appt for inspection in Edison. South Plainfield does not do inspections.

I was also facing same problem, Even though it shows that appointments are available, but it is not allowing to book you that appointment. Someone told me that if you have an existing appointment, then you need to cancel that first and then try to book a new one. You can give it a try.

You can visit any DMV tomorrow. It would be first come first serve basis. You can to DMV by morning 8AM with your paper that has been given to you.. They will give you a paper license after six-point verification. Original license will be mailed to you within 2 weeks.. Hope this helps..

You have to have an appointment. They do not accept a walk in at the moment. We made our appointment back at the beginning of February and just went this past Monday, so they were running about 2 and half months at that time.

They formed two lines at the door. The left line are for walk ins which need tickets. Persons with appointments form a line on the right and need only to show the appointment confirmation on their phone or a print out.

Depends if the written test is older than 2 years or if you had a high school waiver card and you have turned 18 years old then also you have to take the knowledge test again.

Go directly to the MVC take your proof of address and any ID and your social security then you will take a number and a card to fill your information in, then when your turn you will go to the window to check your paper, if okay you will go to the last window to take a picture and give you a permit number, you can open the MVC website to select make appointment knowledge test, fill the data and type the permit number then you can schedule an appointment for the test, you may find the nearest date after one month. Now with COVID, alot.of DMV'S have limited services. If you go to the DMV website it tells you what location offers what services. And be prepared to be there by 6am to get a number. The lines are crazy. I went 3 different days to 4 different DMVs in the area and never made it thru the door. Drove an hour to Oakland last Saturday and I got in. AND they were super pleasant there!

I would suggest you lookup MVC website as they have segregated Centers that do testing and others that only do licensing and registrations. Depending on your location website will allow you to select the one closest to you where you can take test.

You have to pass your written exam first. Then if you pass that exam youll get a blue card. Then you can go to the DMV to get your permit, using the blue card and other forms of identification. They will have you chose a drivers testing day, which will be 6 months after you get your permit. Then once you pass your test you can go back to the DMV, bringing all of the identification that you brought when you went to get your permit. Afterwards you'll get your liscene after the whole process.

7:45 ...I got there just before it opened. Was done in less than 1hour but on my way out it was full in there. Within 20 min I went from outside to ID check, permit intake, permit and photo verification, Vision test, knowledge test. Took about 15 to 20 min on knowledge test, back to step 4 to validate permit and setup road test, then I was done. Go early.
