Great free museum full of great finds and great exhibits The dig pits are cool and fun for those who like to get a bit dirty to try to make cool finds

I went to the museum during the aurora fossil festival and it was so much fun! They have a huge shark tooth collection to look at but also other things like native American tools and a walrus skull. They also have a lot of fossils and teeth to purchase in the gift shop. It's a must see for anyone looking for a fun day trip. I need to go back and dig for fossils!

Wonderful, knowledgeable staff helped us ID our fossil dig finds. A small museum, two rooms and a gift shop. The two fossil dig areas seem positioned so that one is always in shade and one is in the sun, so you have your pick of sun or …

What a gem of a museum, located centrally in town. Super friendly staff and the museum itself is laid out well too. Once you take your tour, be sure and wonder over to the dig piles just across the street and see if you cam find yourself some fossils

Yes , Very much so. I have taken my grandchildren there for years and some since before the were 3. All the folks there that I have uncountered have been great . It is a family oriented community.
Hi Sue, We permit only service dogs inside the museum. Well behaved pets are allowed in the park but we ask that they are kept on a leash and that owners clean up after their furry friends. Hope to see you in Aurora soon! Aurora Fossil Museum
Hi Jorge, The museum complex consists of multiple buildings and a park with two large fossil pits. Currently, due to the pandemic, we have areas in our Main Museum and our park open to the public. The areas in the Main Museum open are the Gift Shop, Restrooms, our Shark Exhibit Room and the Nutrien Mine Room. The Fossil Park is open with picnic tables and benches available to enjoy the crisp autumn air. Our fossil pits are also open, but we do not have any new material in them at this time. We hope that you can plan a visit to the Aurora Fossil Museum soon or in 2021 when we will hopefully have more of the museum buildings and grounds open. Sincerely, Cynthia Crane, Executive Director
They have fossils for sale but you can search for fossils and sharks teeth for free. You just need to bring a shovel and sifter. They sell those too though
Yes it is wheelchair accessible. It is free to dig and go into the museum. Donations and purchases in the museum are greatly appreciated I'm sure.
9 am to 430 PM except on Sunday. They are open 1230 to 430 on Sunday during the summer.
Hi James, We had over 30 dump truck loads delivered the end of May for our Reopening Celebration. Since then, the Town of Aurora turns the pits every 4-6 weeks and they turned both pits for us on Monday August 02. This always allows for many fossils to be discovered. We hope that this information helps and we look forward to seeing you at the Aurora Fossil Museum. -AFM Team
Hello Bobby! While the Fossil Festival will not happen this year, the museum will host a reopening event on May 29th. There will be some food trucks and new material in the pit & the drawing for the Megalodon tooth, but no parade.
Hi Mirandaaa, Thank you for asking. We currently have the park and fossil pits open, but we do not have any new fossil material in the fossil pits. We are working on reopening and are awaiting funding assistance to be approved so we can rent/purchase needed equipment/supplies to be able to safely reopen more of the museum and have new fossil material delivered. We do have some older material in the pits and visitors have found a variety of fossils. We hope that you can visit us in the future. Sincerely, Cynthia Crane, Executive Director, Aurora Fossil Museum
Hours of Operation are: Monday - Saturday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Open Sundays 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm Closed: New Years Day; Easter Sunday; Thanksgiving; Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
Hi Lora, We typically replenish the fossil pits twice a year, in the fall and during Spring prior to the Fossil Festival in May. Due to the logistics, we do not have a definite schedule as to when deliveries will occur. The best way to keep up with this and other museum happenings is to Like our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/aurora.fossil.museum/). We will post announcements on that platform first. We hope that you will be able to visit the museum soon, Aurora Fossil Museum
