The great view of NYC is actually from the nearby Eagle Rock Reservation (in northern West Orange) and you can drive to the overlook at the 9/11 Memorial next to Highlawn Pavilion. South Mountain has lots of amazing trails, but not the same view of NYC. You can still get nice views in South Mountain Reservation though if you park at the dog park on Crest Drive and then walk down the closed-off rest of the road (or the parallel trail) from there to Washington Rock and back.

Depending on which parking lot you park your car. From the nearest parking space is like 3 mintutes walking with no hills, all flat.

Yes. It's the best thing Essex County has done. Great for family. Spend time at the zoo, boat ride, hike, lunch at the restaurant. Enjoy

No, biking is not allowed. Biking causes a lot of pathway erosion so the banned biking on the trails.

Good question, I wasn't aware they actually had posted hours. If you want to go earlier than 8 AM I would suggest calling the Essex County Park Police and seeing if that would be a problem.

There are Many trails. All can be used for running. This is a totally free park. I did a 6 mile loop yesterday hiking. I use the AllTrails App to find/view trails. There maybe other apps specifically for runners. Hope this helps

So to be on the safe side contact someone by phone check the website. They do rent the pavillion so maybe they can work with you. Just know I did not notice any listed restrictions regarding your question. They are more like no bicycles, skateboards, roller skates.... Have you ever tried the lookout on Kennedy Blvd in Weehawken overlooking NY City and the Hudson? I have see a lot of photographers shooting there. Ok good luck.

Autumn is called Fall in USA. A quick google search for Fall Foliage in eastern USA will show results. Its usually varies by lattitude. Late september to mid november is the season approximately to see leaves changing color before shedding.

Grills are available in a few areas. Park in Cherry lane lot and you find BBQ grills by the picnic pavilion. Also you can find them near the entry point on Crest Drive off of West Orange Avenue.

They aren't deep enough for swimming. The pool at the bottom is only about ankle deep. But there's nothing stopping you from wading in.

There are no snakes that you should be worried about in South Mountain.. however there ARE venomous rattle snakes that are native to New Jersey. The Timber rattlesnakes are found in two separate regions of the state. In northern NJ they are found in the mountainous portions of Warren, Sussex, Passaic, Morris and Bergen counties. In southern NJ they are found in the Pinelands region and nearby portions of Cumberland, Ocean, Burlington and Atlantic counties.
