We arrived via the visitor center. It's so much fun sand boarding! The boards cost $25 for the day and they come with wax. It's very hot so get your sunscreen, hats and WEAR SHOES or your feet will burn! We went to the soundside of the park as well and it was really quiet and you could walk WAY out there with the water only being a foot deep. From the website: "The soundside access of the park is a different experience offering sunbathing, wading, paddling, and a one-mile nature trail that opens onto wetlands, grassy dunes and maritime thickets."

Jockey Ridge was such a unique experience. We went hang gliding, which was A LOT of work, but so much FUN!! The scenery was beautiful and so unique. It felt like you were in a desert, but at the top of the dunes, you had a spectacular view. A must see for OBX!

Always have to make a stop here while visiting the Outer Banks. This is a must stop if you are a first time visitor. The facilities have always been clean. The gift shop and vending machines are there if you need a snack or a beverage to cool off. I would suggest bringing some water. It gets hot on top of the ridge. However its worth the hike because the view is amazing.

I always love coming here, and my recent visit on vacation was no exception! The building was closed, but that certainly does not prevent you from going walking around it to access the sand! Is there some sort of trail here? I know this is the end of the mountain-to-sea trail but I thought there was a trail specifically around the park. Plenty of big dunes to take a fun tumble down, and this park contains the highest point in Dare County! They also offer hang gliding here! If you look hard enough you can find the other end of the water too! But what is this mysterious castle structure I took a picture of? There are also showers for your feet at the entrance building, and you will definitely need it!

There are restrooms at the rangers office on the north side of the park and there are restrooms across the road at the kitty hawk kites building. If you're at the little sound access area with the trails on the southern side of the park, there are porta pottys there. The dunes themselves are pretty open and not very dump friendly.
There are boardwalks and the Rangers have a vehicle to transport handicapped to top of Ridge. Just ask.
Yes you can! Review the weather for sunset times, and watch away.
Yes, you can always take camel riding, pilot, and or cooking lessons. Just not here.
I believe the posted open time is 8:00 AM
Not right at the park there isn't that I'm aware of. There are a few rv camping parks near it though. Kitty hawk rv park and obx campground are 2 I can think of.
Yes. But mostly it's just a big open sand dune area and you can hike anywhere you want to.
Very few. Just some seagulls at most.
If you cannot walk, the little overlook at the visitor center would probably be as close as you can get in a wheelchair. If you can walk, but not far or to the top, there is plenty of flat areas in and around the dunes you could enjoy, but no path to the top. If someone in a wheelchair wants to roll up to a high point for a look around, the Wright Brothers Memorial has nice view from the top. I pushed my brother up there once, we were both completely worn out, but it was worth it.
I believe the park is open, but the visitor center may not be.
Whereas practically every where in OBX has an admission fee - jockeys ridge is free. Check the website for events throughout the year. We missed Kites with Lights in December this year. https://www.outerbanksvoice.com/2019/11/09/hangin-with-santa-kites-with-lights/
Tons of places in the sand. Other than that, no.
You can take pets but I would make sure you have a water source. It gets hot and it's a long walk for water.
Kitty hawk kites offers a wide range of options for hang gliding classes on the dunes.
Yes. The dunes took it over a long time ago.
No
I would think 30 minutes. Walking in the sand is hard work! I also went with kids though and that takes longer. For a quick view and pics I would park at the stores across the street and enter that way
It's Awesome! The Largest Living and Tallest Sand Dune on The Eastern Seaboard! Plus, it's The Outer Banks, The Best Surf on The East Coast, and beautiful scenery. One of the many gems making The Great State of North Carolina one of our National Treasures! But it's a Living Dune, so it's Dynamic. The Elements change the layout, so it will differ each visit. Plus, you get to run and jump off big-arse dunes! What's not to Love? And that whole Wright Brothers Thingy, a wee bit North. The Historical Dare County, The Lost Colony, to Ft. Fisher at the opposite end of the OBX! I could go on, as plainly visible, I'm rather proud of my Beloved Great North State. Please, take time and visit! You're Always Welcome! {Just don't leave Trash on the Beach, don't feed seagulls, and if a Barney: Wait your turn in the Line-Up! Surfers do not take the aforementioned actions lightly!} Cheers The height blocks on-shore winds blowing, creating funnels & focusing the current of clean:dirty air
You need a USHGA cetification and and a US park permit to do it with your own glider. If you want to get around this requirement then you must take lessons and go with an instructor. As such costs differ based on school and time of year.
Yes it is , if its summer the sand gets hot so think of your pet and also be courteous to others
Yes, we just signed up to do this tomorrow morning!
