My son treated me to an afternoon visit to the Aboretum, and I was very happy to see it again, since I hadn't visit since I was in high school in the early 80's. Dawes is, I'm very glad to say, every bit as beautiful now as it was then. It wasn't overcrowded, and the people that were enjoying the park along with us were very kind in helping to find certain areas. The gift shop was nice and clean, the staff nice to talk with, and the whole afternoon was just amazing. One thing I would suggest is a pond algae cleaner added to the pond in the Japanese garden.

Dawes Arboretum is a beautiful and well maintained garden broken up into serval distinct areas connected not only by well maintained walking paths, but also by a driving tour. It is a beautiful place to enjoy some peace and quiet. It was not crowded - even on a lovely Saturday morning.

Nice park or arboretum to walk especially if you're tired of your local park and all the riffraff. Yearly membership would be a better deal than paying daily.

The Dawes Arboretum is a cool place to wander around. They have lots of trails and nature to enjoy. The Dawes family home tour is worth the time and the investment. Make sure you climb the observation tower. It is awesome.Michael, thank you for visiting and sharing your experience. We are so glad you enjoyed The Arboretum and we hope to see you again soon!

To understand why there is controversy regarding the implementation of entry fees at The Dawes Arboretum, one must understand the intent of my grandparents, Beman and Bertie Dawes, when they founded the arboretum. It was intended as a place of beauty and respite where the public could go to enjoy themselves and learn about trees, nature and history. Importantly it was established by the founders to allow everyone, people of all income groups to enter free of charge. To enable the public to come to its grounds free of charge, Beman & Bertie established an endowment to cover basic annual operating expenses. Modest in the beginning, that endowment has now grown to well-over $70 million dollars. For those concerned the arboretum does have the funds to keep its doors open, worry no more, my friends. There is plenty of money to ensure the long term stability of the arboretum. This controversy will remain as long as this unnecessary fee is charged to visitors. Tear down this wall, trustees!
Please call 800.44.DAWES for information on senior discounts for Arboretum membership.
I believe they do plus many other trees I have never seen before. Best to call ahead.
Yes for most of it. There are definitely areas that will be a more difficult push as they are unpaved and rough. Indoor bathrooms are available.
Yes. For one thing the visitor center has interesting exhibits.
Yes there is a tower you can climb. It's a wooden structure with an incredible view from the top. Children and adults love it.

No, The Dawes Arboretum does not raise or butcher pigs.
You can find our Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) on our grounds in the Conifer Collection. The exact location can be found on Arboretum Explorer: https://dawesarb.arboretumexplorer.org/taxon-27988.aspx?qr=0. We do not have any coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) on our grounds. Also, be sure to check out our extensive collection of dawn redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides).
No, calm down Karen.
Sounds like a memory garden.
A bird won't but you can hang bird netting 2_3 inches from the area it has been pecking and that should keep it from pecking it any further
The arboretum does not provide trails for atv riding.

Most but not all of it is.
We allow catch-and-release fishing in Dawes Lake for Dawes Arboretum members only. Non-members are not permitted to fish at The Arboretum.
Hasn't the old tower been torn down? It is probably a liability issue.
On the website, there is fall festival on October 21
