I completed an application to adopt a dog. I was told to schedule an appointment to meet the dog and that I would have to meet him more than once. I was very excited. I scheduled the appointment for the the next day. The morning of the next day, I received an email stating that someone else expressed interest in adopting the dog and may adopt him today. I do not understand why I was told to schedule the appointment to meet him. Then, overnight, how someone else got first bids. The rules do not apply. The staff was very unprofessional in getting my hopes up and then giving the dog to another individual who obviously did not have to complete the adoption application or meet the dog at least twice to make sure it was a good fit. Here is the first email: "Thank you for your interest in adopting Cloud! Cloud has been working on some training techniques with our Behavior Specialist. To set their adopter up for success we are facilitating visits with potential adopters for this dog with our Behavior Specialist, so he can provide information and tips. If you’d like to schedule a visit, we ask that you please send in a completed adoption questionnaire as the first step, to provide a little more information about your home and what you’re looking for in a dog." Here is the second email: "My name is Randy Mouri and I am the trainer/behavior and enrichment specialist for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. I will be introducing Cloud to you. As you may have already read in his notes, he is often slow to warm up to new people. For this reason, we will require a minimum of two visits, though more may be necessary to earn Clouds trust." Here is the third email: "I apologize for the delayed response, but we’ve had an exceptionally high interest in Cloud and he may be adopted today." As you can see from the emails, the other person did not have to schedule multiple appointments to meet Cloud (the dog). It is not fair and the rules do not apply to certain entitled individuals. I will not engage or pursue any activities in the future with the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.

I was beyond pleased with the whole experince of adopting our kitten Winsome. We had went and made an appointment back in late 2021 to view some kittens after checking the website. All the staff were incredibly nice and thorough through the whole process. The tech working in the cat area let us look over several kittens outside the one we had already looked at, and was helpful in explaining temperaments that would match with our resident cat. We stayed with the one we had looked at, went through paperwork and was able to grab a few items from the donation area as well. The whole process overall was stress-free, straightforward and everyone was very kind. The building was also very clean and well kept. Happy to have another addition to the family, she's fitting right in with our other cat.

Had a great experience getting another guinea pig. Everyone was nice and it was a quick process. We had a meet and greet for my guinea pig Titan. We met 3 guinea pigs and Titan chose Ring. They're learning each other and it's been nice to see the popcorning from the both of them. They have gotten into a brotherly squabble or two but whenever I tell them to stop they comfort each other and will get along until Titan bothers Ring. During quarantine Titan tried to teach Ring how to escape his cage but luckily for me, he didn't catch on. Thanks to everyone that helped us. I recommend getting a guinea pig from this shelter. They're sweet animals and the people there are very nice.

It is no surprise to me that there are already so many fantastic reviews of this shelter. We recently adopted a beautiful dog from them and received service that I had never experienced at any shelter before (I come from northern NJ, for reference). We sent in our application for our dog and received a phone call from the shelter just two days later. They were able to set us up with an appointment to meet the dog that day. The shelter itself is kept very clean and all staff are welcoming, kind, and clearly want what’s best for their animals. They answered any and all questions and even let us take home whatever we wanted from the donations section (which has canned food, treats, collars, toys, crates, etc.). We also received a free voucher for a wellness exam, valid within two weeks of adopting. I would highly recommend this shelter to anyone looking to adopt.

I need assistance with catching a stray/feral cat; which I have been taking care of for several years. He has a hurt paw and it looks swollen. I want to take him to the vet. I have tried to catch him, but no luck.
Please check the website for how to view adoptable animals.
No answer? I have the same question .
It's best to check and see what animals they have for adoption on either the Fairfax County website or search for the shelter on Petango.com
Yes they do. Thank you for donating.
The animal shelter has scanners and yes, they routinely check stray animals for them. You may want to double check with the microchip company to make sure your contact info is up to date. That said, people will often find a friendly stray, take them home, and not report it to the shelter so never underestimate the power of posting on social media or flyers around where she was lost. Best of luck and we all hope you find her soon!
Please check the website for how to view current adoptable animals.
You can also check out Anicira which is a low cost spay/neuter clinic.
Free this is adoption idk about a fee tho
No. They are a no kill shelter. I would suggest contacting Pender Animal Clinic near Fair Oaks Mall.
Please call the shelter for better service of locating your pet.
Yes, please call 703-691-2131, for the Animal Protection Police dispatcher.
I'm not sure the Shelter checks this page. Please call them on Tuesday when they open.
Yes. 10am - 5pm.
That's what their volunteer program does. You should check it out! The animals love the attention and it helps with house training & socialization so they are more adoptable.
There are a number of kittens in foster at this time. I recommend checking the shelter's Petango page ( https://www.petango.com/FairfaxCountyAnimalShelter ) to see which animals are available at any given time. Best of luck to you and your future kitten!
Sorry for your loss. Yes, donations are always appreciated and thank you for thinking of the shelter. If the shelter cannot use them they allow adopters and those going through hard times to get items at no cost. Your contributions could help someone in need or help a family with their new pet. Washing them before donating is a big help as well.
I cant seem to find any rabbit rescues near by around DC, Arlington or Fairfax, they’re all miiles away can you please help?
Unfortunately this is not the responsibility of the shelter. Here is a link that will help https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/wildlife/injured-and-orphaned-wildlife
I suggest you go to the county web site with your questions, or call the shelter directly
To better reflect what they do, Fairfax County recently renamed the officers Animal Protection Police. Call#77 on your cell and the operator will get you to them. 😊
The Fairfax County Animal Shelter does not euthanize for space. As noted prior, the primary reason is for terminal medical conditions. Even then, there is a network of fosters that will open their homes to an animal with an incurable condition but good quality of life.
Call and make an appointment to surrender her. The staff will have you fill out a form so her new family will be able to know as much about her as possible. Any vet records you have will also help. Good luck and so sorry you can't take her with you.
At the moment, yes we do.
Per their website volunteers must be 18 year old or older.
Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older but there are many ways to help out other than volunteering!
18 years or older
If you mean a ferret, then yes, when the shelter has them available.
I know they will not hold her for you. First come first serve basis for surrendered pets
Call Fairfax County Animal Police/animal control.
I don't think so
Sorry, no. But you can get a dog sitter? And pay them to watch your dog when you go travelling!
Sometimes the Shelter has Beagles, ages vary. Best to check the Shelter website.
Ya they do
Opened bags of food are accepted and used for Wildlife Rescue.
I have a mixed shitzu, I'm trying to give away
This shelter occasionally has puppies but, if you want one now I would recommend looking at Homeward Trails adoption center.
