I always wanted to go to Fort Ross and it didn’t disappoint, be sure to watch the short film at the welcome center about the history of Fort Ross.

Worth the drive, the road from Sacramento is breathtaking, plenty of place to stop on the way to take pictures, oldest Russian settlement in USA, museum with plenty of information about the place!! Excellent day trip!!

Interesting place to visit with important historical value. Beautiful views from the fort and very cheap to visit. We were very impressed that charging for electric vehicles was available so far out from population.

The museum is small but has a lot of information, they have an informational video that runs and they allow you to go up into the building at the fort. The fort also sits on a lot of land where tou can walk along the cliffs, down to the beach and supposedly to the cemetery as well. The church is a national landmark and according to the info at the fort holds services twice a year.

Fort Ross is outside of Bogega Bay on the west coast of California. Not sure it is the same. The Russians had forts up the coast of California and in Alaska.
Fort Ross is a California State Park. I suppose that makes it a public park, too, but specifically it’s a Calif. state park. You’re welcome!
I would visit the website or give the park a call.
It was open but some of the buildings were closed. My wife and I loved the hike and walked down to the beach down from the Fort. Beautiful place regardless if not all buildings were open. Restrooms open as well.
Have a question?
Probably Memorial day weekend.
A dignitary is usually a highly esteemed guest from another country. Sometimes politically connected. Sometimes royalty. Sometimes scientists who are investigating something. Neat if you get to be around them.
You're close to the ocean, i didn't see signs prohibiting fishing. If you have a fishing licence, you could I suppose. There is a Ranger/Tour Guide, you may want to check with him.
If you mean the number of people working and living in Fort Ross when it was still a Russian settlement - 260 at its peak. And the initial group who built the fortress consisted out of 115 people, 25 Russians among them.
The only armed incident on the territory of the Ross colony occurred in 1840, when, in anticipation of the imminent departure of the Russians, the Mexican Commandant General M.G. Vallejo sent a platoon of soldiers to Bodega to collect duties from an American ship that had entered there. The Mexican soldiers were expelled from the territory of the colony by A. G. Rotchev.
The Russians were forced to leave, as Catherine K. sold Alaska, from which all the supplies were brought up. Those. The logistics of the Russian settlers were cut off the supply of everything they needed: cannons, gunpowder, women. This was a historical mistake. Or lucky. This is which side to look at.
