Best little secret in Southern Illinois. The history is awesome. The fort is free to do a self tour at your own pace. The museum is very informative.

I believe the front doors are locked, but you could certainly walk around the side of the fort to get in. The museum and rooms are worth seeing, though, if you can get there before 5. They give you better perspective about the fort's purpose.
