This is one of my all time favorite spots on Earth. I have been visiting Fort Independence since as far back as I can remember (the late 1970s) and I visit every time I return to Boston. I recently brought my teenage kids and we had so much fun playing where I did when I was half their age. My grandmother used to bring me to play in the very same park and though she passed before meeting her grandkids I know she would have been thrilled to see so much happiness.

Very enjoyable grounds and playground surrounded by water with views of Boston Harbor and Logan International Airport.

Nice place to come and watch the harbor. It's interesting to see the boats come back and forth and see the planes landing at Logan Airport in the distance. The breeze off the harbor is really relaxing. Dogs are allowed on leash. There is a restaurant on premise that you can order from if you're so inclined. The view is expansive (hence the fort) and a great way to spend an afternoon.

The place appeared to be clean & well maintained/landscaped. Lots of picnic tables & waste receptacles. You can't go in the fort which was a bummer... and the people there were all really gross & annoying. The views however were very beautiful. I went during sunset and would definitely recommend that time.

I've heard tell this happens in the future 😂
Free guided tours of Fort Independence are provided by volunteers of the Castle Island Association each weekend and holiday from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The first tour starts at 12 p.m. (noon), and the last tour at 3 p.m.
You can walk around the fort anytime without a guide. I believe you can only go inside with a tour guide. The Castle Island Association sponsors free tours of Fort Independence at Castle Island, weather permitting. Check the tour schedule: June and July Saturday and Sunday- Noon to 3:30pm Thursday- Twilight skyline viewing 7:00pm to dusk August Saturday and Sunday- Noon to 3:30pm September and October Sundays only- Noon to 3:30pm (ending Columbus Day weekend)
No
The fort itself is not open to the public, especially during the pandemic. Park hours are probably posted dawn to dusk, but there is no gate to the parking area so, yes you can visit at 5 AM.
Fishing licenses aren't offered nor sold on site at Castle Island/ Fort Independence. Same with rods and bait. BYO and you're good to go.
The height ranges, but the walls are approximately 30 feet.
Every hour, depending on time of year
