Hiked Saturday June 18, 22 Parking: We arrived just after nine, and there were many spots available. Make sure to check when and if you need a permit (I don’t believe one will be required for the rest of the summer). The hike: We started by heading left on Augspurger trail and doubling back to the right so as to skip the steep part right in the beginning. Yes, it’s steep, but not terribly hard with breaks. The top is remarkably windy, and apparently there are lots of bugs up there, but if you choose a windy or overcast day like I did, apparently that’s not a problem. The flowers, of course, are gorgeous. I recommend ☺️

Dog mountain is definitely a leg work out. This was my second time going up this season, the first was when there was still snow up top. I don’t recommend going when there is snow unless you have proper gear for that. However, this time, the infamous wildflowers were in full bloom! I highly recommend this hike for a novice really trying to take it to the next level, or an avid hiker still looking for a good challenge! Can be muddy at times, and some of the steeper hills will really get your cardio in check!

Beautiful hike during Spring wildflower season. Check the US Forest Service site for necessary hiking pass details during that time. You will need a US Forest Service parking pass year-round. It is a DIFFICULT hike, because of the elevation gain. Vault toilets are available a short distance up the trail. If you are new to hiking, please know that it is good hiking etiquette to give the right of way to the uphill hiker in tight spots on the trail. Enjoy!

Really enjoyed my first hike up Dog Mountain. When I got to the Difficult/More Difficult trail split, I opted for the easier of the two. Where the two meet again (2000’), the trail got steeper and icy/crunchy. Not bad going up but challenging on the way down without microspikes. The final straightaway to Puppy Dog Viewpoint is well traveled, packed snow. After that, there were ankle deep footprints to the top, the final ~0.5mi. I chose to turn back as it was getting late. It was probably doable with just hiking boots though I’d like to return soon with microspikes or snow shoes. Maybe some gaiters. And a sack lunch!!! So beautiful up there!

No, there is a station with envelopes in it. Just take one envelope, put $5 bill in it, remove receipt from the envelope and put on a dashboard, put envelope with money into a payment box.
No. Just some small yellow wildflowers.
I've never seen a snake on that trail and I hike it at least once a week.
Late May to Early July is the best time to go look at the flowers.
Probably not, there is limit and it will probably sold out weeks ago. Either shuttle or buy early, otherwise no permit needed on weekdays.
Nope, the Nwp pass is what you need. A discover pass is not acceptable. If you don't have a pass, its $5 for parking and there is paper for that at the spot.
