The Service:
To submit the visa application - Don't go early in the morning, it is mad house! As long as you go before they close at 2pm and get a ticket. They will absolutely process your application. And it goes so much faster because more windows opened .
For pick up - You don't need to ask for ticket to pick up your visa. Go after 1pm before they close at 2pm. The line is so much shorter!! Also, very easy to find street parking too!!
They do have copy machine there now!!
The Parking: On Shatton St, street metered parking (2 hours). On 4th St, residential parking (free).

The office is at the 500 building on the third floor in the same one as a Korean church. The yellow Fa Lun Gong posters will mark the spot.
Make sure you have copies and originals of your documents and copies of your passport page and your last visa if you have it. There is an office down the other end of the hall where you can make copies for 25 cents a copy. The lady will do it if only 1-2 copies but have cash ready.
Get a number on the right side of security after you pass through the metal detector, and the wait was quick in the morning. I had 13 and the number was 3, but I got called in about ten minutes.
I missed some details but the lady wasn’t angry. She just matter-of-factly stated what I needed. And I had to return two times because I missed something, but I didn’t have to retake a number which was great.
The turnaround for documents is four business days. You can pay extra for three days. Keep the pink slip for pickup and payment when you return. They only accept Visa or Mastercard. No cash.
In China, it’s a seal or no deal. So make sure all of your documents look official with proper letterhead and have signatures along with that dreaded read seal or stamp, and don’t ever break the seal or tear out the staple, otherwise, it’s useless.
They work like robots and are very efficient. Just make sure you have everything ready before you go or it'll be wasted time and another trip. You won't get the normal niceties and customer service isn't in the vocabulary, so don't expect it.
When I asked what day the docs will be ready, the lady actually told me! 谢谢！

The consulate never call you. The calls are fake and they are scam calls. It is on the news. Do not answer the calls and do not follow the directions to key in numbers. If you speak English, the caller won't do anything. They only target to Chinese elderlies.

For US passport holders, if you're applying for a tourist visa, they give you 10 yrs multiple entries, each entry is good for 60 days stay. Application must be typed in capital letters. Google their website & you can find their latest application form. You must have your ID picture on the application form, photocopy of the picture page of your passport, confirm flight reservation & your hotel reservation. If you stay in the airport in shanghai , you don't! Unless you are planning to walk in the city. But three hours might not be enough.
I went on Friday the 16th, yes they were “closed” BUT they were still there for people that showed up. They did charge an additional $90 for making them work on their holiday, but to me it was worth not being in lines or waiting. There was only one person there when I went and we both walked out within 30 minutes. They will mail my information via FedEx this week also ($20). They will be open on Monday the 19th.

You only need one. Go to Costco ($11) ask them specifically for a visa picture for China, you’ll get 4 for that price. No jewelry, no hair on your face, don’t smile and ears must show.
