Great series of trails through varied habitats. A great place to see birds year round

I'm really glad I discovered this place the other weekend with my family. It has so much to explore and enjoy, and the wildlife opportunities are amazing. There are a lot of wintering birds that frequent here at this time, and I've been grabbing my camera and heading out there almost every morning for a week. Eagles, herons, egrets, and of course ducks and geese are common. Love it.

Nice drive around the loop and there are places to pull over. Road are a bit dusty as they are mostly gravel but well maintained. Lots of birds and a few mammals. Visitor center is currently closed but usually has bathrooms, nice talks and tiny gift shop. Trees around the building often have woodpeckers and phoebes in fall. We saw (April) quail, bluebirds, herons, egrets, Canada geese, osprey, green-wing teal, shovelers, pintails, mallards, ring necked ducks, coots and a nutria. Lots of trails and a couple areas for picnicking. Also saw pelicans in fall.

Away from it all. The boardwalk feels otherworldly and emerging by the lake is as taking a deep breath. All trails here are easy and beautiful.

Yes.
No, I haven't seen a bear there, but many times elsewhere. I wouldn't be very concerned. I assume it was a black bear. Unless they are caring for their young, they are usually peaceful.
Theres 1 picnic table at one of the little pullouts. I think it's on woodpecker loop
Edited for a correction: No dogs allowed outside the vehicle! There are many birds in the area and it is a wildlife refuge. (Thanks for your update.)
The refuge will be open for people to visit. However there are seasonal closures, so please pay attention to the signs. The refuge office and the nature store will be closed.
