If you go in being unaware and unscared of nature, something is wrong. Fear keeps you aware and cautious. If you dont keep a messy camp or go trying to get close to wild animals, then you will really enjoy your visit. Dont allow fear of possibilities keep you from enjoying nature and its greatness..

No need to freak out. Carry bear spray when hiking and make noise on the trails.

If you stay on marked trails, you'll be lucky if you spot a bear

We have holidayed in West Glacier for the last 7 years. Have biked in Whitefish and camped in Columbia Falls. Never seen a bear.

It's a rare occurrence and there are precautions you can take. Keeping a Safe Distance - 100 yards (91.4 meters) of bears or wolves, or within 25 yards (23 meters) of any other wildlife. You are not in a petting zoo. Hike in Groups - This significantly decreases your chances of having a bear encounter. Trail running - Don't. Carry Bear Spray - An inexpensive and a very effective deterrent Make Noise - Bear bells may not be enough. Calling out and clapping at regular intervals are better ways to make your presence known. Secure your Food and Garbage - All edibles, food containers (empty or not), cookware (clean or not), and trash (including feminine hygiene products) must be stored in a food locker or hung when not in use, day or night. Your car is not a food locker. Be Aware of Your Surroundings - Some trail or environmental conditions make it east to surprise a bear. Avoid hiking early in the morning, late in the day, or after dark.

I've had numerous up close and personal Bear encounters, with both Black Bears and Grizzlies, and have never felt threatened. Just hike in groups of 3+ and carry bear spray and make noise.

All of the above. Wear a bear bell and carry high quality bear spray. I saw bears twice last year, but they were little brown bears.

Bear bells on your pack and bear spray very handy. Always talk to the rangers, they very knowledgeable and usually have a lot of useful information. No worries.
