I feel I should pay a visit just for this breathing hole, and I will next time I’m at cinders but my curiosity won’t stop. What’s the Native American explanation for digging this hole or is it a natural phenomenon they found and maybe built around?

When barometric pressure is rising it pushes cold air out of the vent like an air conditioner. When barometric pressure is falling, no wind from the hole. It's a natural phenomenon, not man made, and the underground caverns causing the rush of cold air are not accessible. The cold air comes out strong enough to blow a hat 10-15 feet in the air when you let it go over the vent. Quite amazing and one of the most memorable and surprising things discovered on our trip out west.

They found a hole, no digging required

It's more than a hole, wapatki is a series of 4 dwellings. It can get hot and windy. Make sure you filled the gas tank as well because it's a 25 mil loop

Wupatki is a 600 year old Indian village, you can see much of the old buildings in various stages of disrepair. There is also a vent to an underground cave structure that they used, probably ceremoniously. They did not create the vent, and it is literally just a hole. But there is much more to see there than the vent.
