Olive oil once a week works good, but there are some cat food the dryed food that is hair ball formulated that works great. Walmart does carry it. You'll have to look for it. The price is good on it. I have a pure breed Manx and his fur is a medium, and works well for him.

Personally, I use a teaspoon of olive oil in my cats' food once a week. It aids in yhe digestion of the hair. She rarely chokes on hairballs anymore. I hope that helps! Good luck!
