Hello I'm looking to take my 3 year old on his first camping trip . He loves water & we would like to find a spot for him to safely play in the river. I know a river changes day to day but would this he a place for my boy to enjoy his first trip ?

Yes there is a good place in tbe campground for kids to swim its shallow and the river slows down if you go through the campground and keep on the road it will take you to a small parking lot

Definitely is. Just like any river there are step drop offs that sneak up on ya but it's a great place for safe family fun.

Its good to be concerned with the river levels, speed and dont forget about the people floating. It can be dangerous but so is everything nowadays for comparison and will always be your responsibility. You can always check out other state parks with lakes to swim in if too concerned though, could be a great place to start for beginner swimmers though less refreshing if you've eve been in a lake. I personally suggest you take him to Huzzah Valley, I've seen plenty smaller children swim there with plenty of shallow areas even with water up. Its nearby to Meramec and you cant beat their bathrooms for cleanliness which will cost you a day pass($9), but children under 8 are free and it puts all state parks to shame when compared. Staff is friendly and can assist with any other questions of the area. This is not an advertisement, its just a great place with lots to do. Its also right beneath meramec park so only a "minor" detour....no pun intended.
