Should I take police or sheriffs deputies with me while trying to retrieve my property from a person I was staying with that does not want to give it back?

Property collection is a civil matter. Law enforcement will not assist without a court order. Use a neutral third party to help collect the item (mutual friend,etc.). Or, you can send a certified letter requesting that the person release (ship) the item to you. if not then you can secure a criminal summons for them as depriving you of your property is larceny. Summons are obtained from a magistrate.

It's funny because I had the same problem happen before I moved out of my house from my room mate Lisa. I was told by the Buncombe County Sheriff's Department that the only way to do this was to file a court order, to get everything out of the place (which was around $120 if I went through with it, but didn't) but I wish I took the earlier route... had a co worker and their girlfriend offer to help me take my stuff out. Either way, I'm really sorry about your situation and I really hope it's not too late to get your things. 😢😡
