There is some great folklore about this place. Definitely Google the legend of Tates Hell. There us even a film about it which was produced by FSU. I've been through hell, and you don't want to do it without emergency supplies. Cell service is poor. Roads can be impassable. Bears, panthers, wild hogs, gators, mosquitos. Not where you want to be without shelter, food and firearms.
Legend says man named Tate spent days in there, emerged, said his name, that had just been through hell, and died.
C.Tate, a local homesteader who became lost in the woods in the mid 1870s. He had ventured into the woods with his hunting dog in order to shoot a panther that had attacked his livestock. The legend is often recounted with Tate becoming separated from his dogs and lost for seven days and seven nights before coming to a clearing near Carrabelle, where he lived only long enough to say to a passerby "My name is Cebe Tate, and I just came from Hell" before collapsing.[2]
Story goes way back it was named Tate's hell do to a man who got lost in the woods when out hunting, he got bit by a snake an manage to survive many days in hell in the woods, then crawled out close to carabelle Florida, he lived long enough to tell his story then unfortunately passed away due to infection that went to his heart from the snake bite.. an as mentioned they made a movie an song about his story .
