You are warned when you sign the lease to give notice ahead of time (30 days) or your lease will automatically renew month to month. Vacancies cost money, so giving them notice allows them the ability to start filling the apartment sooner. It's just business and they give full disclosure. I just signed my lease and that was told to me openly during the signing.
