We have a male 6yr old Dane with localized cancer on lower left leg who has otherwise been healthy. Would a responsible Dane owner consider amputation? He is sleek which would be a plus.

I was told same thing about my cat. As a second opinion I took her to the VSS and turns out didn't need amputation. I would suggest to get second opinion!

Definitely. Dogs & cats do just fine as tripods.

VSS has the best vets! They will be very honest with you. If they feel that the animal won't be able to handle/tolerate any type of surgery or procedure they give options. In the last 6 years, I've taken 3 of my dogs there. One survived for 2 years after they took out part of his liver! They other one, the cancer was too aggressive, and they were honest. Told me to go home and love her and make her as comfortable as possible with pain meds. One of the dogs I rescued after she was gone, was just recently diagnosed with Lymphoma. I went running to VSS! He's had 6 months of chemo. Finished 2 months ago. And has been in remission for the last 7 months! That's right. Within the 1st month he was in remission. Go to VSS. Dr. Smith is wonderful!

I def recommend taking him to VSS. Let them look at him. They will do all they possibly can to save his life.

I have that has a Dane with cancer in his leg she took him to Mizzou and they put him in a trial program for the cancer. He did have to have his leg remove at VSS .
