I have heard from Embassy staff that once you have your NICOP ID card there is no need for a Pakistan Passport as NICOP works in lieu of free of cost Visa to travel to Pakistan with your US Passport.

First, apply for National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) which you can do on line at https://ID. nadra.gov.pk. This website works better on Microsoft Edge browser. After you have received your NICOP, you can apply for renewal of your Pakistani Passport at any Embassy or Consulate of Pakistan location.
