He was in fact 86 as stated. One of his most famous phrases was " my footprints are almost always speckled with blood ". This phrase is coined by his many expodissions in which either game was harvested or companions were killed.
Just shy of 86 when he died at his son's home in Defiance Missouri. His last words... I'm going now. (Cough cough croak.)
1734 to 1820 made him a very old man by the longevity expectations of the day.
He had to be over 90 when he died. He died September 26, 1820.
