If you are a walk-on passenger you never need a reservation. With a car... On a slow day they rarely fill up and you can buy a ticket at the ferry when you arrive. Busy weekends and holidays they fill up fast - youll have to know which ferry you're taking and make a reservation in advance They have always been very good about changing a reservation, though, so its safe to book a trip and, if necessary, change it when youre plans change - as long as there are spots available .
You cannot buy ticket on board the boat - you buy at ticket office, or via ferry-staff directing cars. When you get there, you drive your car into reserved or stand-by lines, according to ferry-staff who will direct you. Stand-by fits as possible, after reserved/arrived are boarded. For reservations, be there 1/2hr before.
Just call to make a reservation walk ons don't need one
You can't buy tickets on board only in the ticket house or online.
I have always made reservations. However i have learned that if theyre slow enough and have room theyll squeeze you on for the earlier ride. Walk on with or with out animals do not need a reservation.
You can buy it on board.
