If they aren't suited for guide or vet dog work sometimes they are considered for other organizations such as ATF. Most of the time however, they are adopted by their puppywalker or someone else whom is approved to adopt.
GDF keeps an adoption waiting list ..nine of our dogs go to a shelter. Retired guides that return are even adopted...occasionally a few are kept right at the Foundation to live out life in leisure hanging with whelping moms and puppies as well as dogs in for training. Pride ourselves in caring for these dogs at every age and phase.
Yes ToniAnn Is right that's the way it goes. But you can always put your name on the list to see you you can adopt a dog there.
