Original Capital was built in 1819-1822. That burned in 1897. On May 5, 1904 the cornerstone was laid for the new Capital, which is the current Capital. Then on October 4, 1906 Theodore Roosevelt attended the dedication and said, "the handsomest building I ever saw.'
It was dedicated in October of 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1902 the Cobb Capital was built in to replace the Hills capital that burnt down Feb. 2nd 1897. After the Cobb capital was built in 1902 they decided it wasn't good enough, and wanted something better. So they hired Architect Joseph Hudson to design a new building using parts of the existing Cobb Capital building. The building you see now is his finished product. When Roosevelt came to dedicate it he was quoted as saying "This is the prettiest building I have ever saw"
