Best bet is a parking garage. Parking is simply expensive in DC. Honestly I'd just keep the car in the hotel garage or lot and use public transportation or those scooter things everywhere.
There is some on-street metered parking along the mall and on cross streets. It's limited, $2 per hour and, of course, first come.
There isn't any parking at the museum, but there are some paid parking garages nearby.
