From experience, providing pictures of an item may only be sufficient for them to determine that an in-person evaluation is needed. They would not even provide us a ballpark estimate based on pictures alone.

Sotheby’s can provide you with a rough estimate. If thw item is valuable, it would have to be examined in person if you wanted a more precise auction estimate. It should be authenticated. Also items such as violins should be played to ascertain sound quality which would impact the value too.
