Near Trump's Tower they have bikes for rent for $5 or $6 whole day. So it saves your money.
We rent at NY BIKE in 5th avenue corner. The staff is helpfull and Kindle. They give you a map with must see points.
Do you have to check them in every 30 minutes at a dock, even if you rented them for the whole day or however many days?
Citi bike would work, but there are other options like bike NYC that will rent a bike for the day rather than by the half hour.

There is also a bike shop near 44 west and 55th Ave that gave a discount. In the end it was $15 for 3 hours and $14 for a child in the same time.
