This is the County (government run) Animal Shelter where open intake is required. This means they cannot turn animals away like specific rescues can. Space is limited and depending on the space vs intake ratio, sometimes it is the only option they have. However, compared to other County Shelters, Wake's euthanasia rate is lower because of their foster program and the many rescues they work with.
No we are the only intake for all of the animals of wake county . We only put down for health space
While the number of animals that have been euthanized for space has been very low over the past five years, Wake County Animal Center is not a no-kill shelter. The most frequent reasons for euthanization, however, include major health problems, aggression/dangerous snimsls, significant behavioral issues, and bites. The shelter also offers the Public Service of no-cost euthanization for personally owned pets that are suffering from terminal illness or end-of-life issues.
