I have a sailboat vanity plate (strmin). Can I get this plate converted to a veterans plate?

Yes. When ordering veteran license plates, you need to provide either discharge papers (form DD-214) or other valid proof supporting your military record. The waving flag "Veteran" plate is available as passenger, commercial (10,001 lbs or less), and motorcycle plates.There will be a sticker on the upper right corner designating the branch of service or Gold Star parent. There is no fee for an initial Veterans plate. You'll have to fill out the registration form: http://www.dmv.ri.gov/documents/forms/registration/TR-1.pdf Bring the form with you to any DMV office to get your new plates. If the alphanumeric combination from your "Sailboat" plate is available, it will be issued to you. If no, we will offer you another set. You can also cancel your old plates that time, if you should choose to do that.

You Will have to reapply for a veterans plate with the letters of your current plate and if available you can get it.
