Caltrain station as well as VTA light rail and bus hub are across the street. VTAs 22 and 522 lines stop in front. By car, from HWY 87 take the Julian St exit (best route but can take Santa Clara St) parking is expensive at the arena's lots but downtown is cheap. There is the issue of walking past some homeless people but if you're a group, you'll be fine. I work downtown and at the arena and in over 9 years have never had a problem walking to the arena from my day job (about a mile and past a homeless encampment.)

We parked at a lot across the street from SAP Center for $20. Just had to cross the street
Free street parking near wholefoods
If you're not far, just Uber a ride. We usually drop family and friends off, then pick up later by Whole Foods.
There is no close by public transit. You have to walk a few blocks in an area that late at night i would not recommend. I could only recommend to drive and start at one of the parking lots close by
