Unfortunately it's first come first served. You need your BC. There's no best day but we arrived @ 8 am and there were people ahead of us, waiting in line for the doors to open. Another visit we arrived around 3 pm. It seemed we were taken care of faster! Maybe because the staff wanted to leave on time and took care of us sooner. If I was in your situation, if possible. I would stay in SF over the weekend. Be a tourist, and go there on Monday. Just don't forget all your documents!
