My nephew died recently. Was never married nor had children. His mother is his only survivor. Now,! He left just over $1000 . The bank requires it go through probate?????

Potentially, yes, George. Probate is an after death administrative process when a person dies owning money or property in their name only with no beneficiary designation. If your nephew's account with Bank of America was in his name only and no one was listed as a beneficiary on the account, it is going to have to be probated.
