When I was there in March it did not smell at all and was actually quite beautiful. I think the smell is not generated by the lake itself but by algae blooms that are present only sometimes.
A lot of the time the lake. doesn't have much of a smell at all, its when the alge blooms that it gets a bit stinky.

I was there in February 2018 and yes, there was a salty smell in the air but it wasn't unbearable by any means.
It depends on what "smells" mean to you. It smells like the ocean, salt, algae, and sometimes, like sulfur. You can smell these things depending on the wind direction and weather. When we went, it was fine by the beach where we stayed but smelled in some areas as we drove out.
I went there in February and it was smell, not much to see, but the sunrise and sunset could be beautiful, and the salvation mountain is near by.
