I use it regularly. I wouldn't drink the water, but it's kayaking NOT snorkeling. Ignore the snowflakes, paddle hard.
Not to my knowledge the water smelled so strong of sulfur at the state recreation area and I didn't see any boats on the water. It's more for sightseeing or camping than watersports.
I swam in it. Ended up cutting my foot on those damn barnacles. It was cool to be able to float on the surface and get a bit of a tan in the winter. I had salt all over myself all day! It was great.
I'd google the health hazards in the air and the water before you do, and make your own decision regarding what you are comfortable having your lungs and skin exposed to.
Yes but be careful with the muddy shores, they're deceiving and can be almost like quick sand. You want launch from a sandy beach.
