I'm not sure. I was kidnapped and carjacked. Everything I owned was in my car. OPD recovered my car Jan 17. I was not notified. They had it towed to "Police impound." I did not find out until I called to follow up with them, on Jan 27. According to the owner of the tow company my car is essentially empty. Everything gone including the key fob. I am from out of state. I traveled all the way there to be told that I OWE $1096 to the 'police impound" for towing and storing my car! Turns out police impound is PRIVATELY OWNED. When OPD was called, I was told it was not their problem. That it was a private, therefore Civil, matter. They said I'd have to pay whatever the owner wanted to charge me or sue him. When I explained I had lost EVERYTHING I had. OPD suggested that I apply for welfare for the money. *Sorry, for the LONG, bitter, answer. A better answer is: You will probably have to file a police report re: your stolen property. It may turn it to be Civil. In which case, they won't help
Officers can meet you at his location to keep the peace while you retrieve your items. Or you can contact the Ventura County Courthouse to take him to court for the items.
