Hello, yes, you can sleep in your car. You don't have to have a tent. You can stay in developed car campgrounds for $20-$35/night or you can disperse camp. For disperse camping, you do need to contact one of the ranger stations for areas where disperse camping is allowed. For the Big Sur area, call the Big Sur Visitor Center. It is open this weekend, 831-667-2315 or you can call the Santa Barbara District office in the southern Los Padres at 805-967-3481 X 0, otherwise, call the ranger stations on Monday when they reopen at 8:00am.
Who wants to be bothered by raccoons, and snakes? Plus it's warmer & safer. Why sleep in a tent?
