If I buy an Apple TV device, do I have to buy/pay for a subscritption to an Apple provided streaming service? If I don't, will it work with another provider? I want to try out Directtv Now. Will the Apple Tv devise work for that provider?

No Apple work on its own and you don't need to subscribe to anything. You need fast internet access.
