Is the ear clipped? If the kitten isn't adoptable they will fix, clip, and release back at your address. I've had to find homes for the ferals I've trapped and fixed myself.

I would suggest that you bring the kitten in to them to have them scan the chip. Then 2020 Forest should be able to determine who "adopted" the kitten who seems to have "adopted" you. The info on who adopted the kitten is not an open piece of information. How they handle the chip info & kitten they can discuss with you. The kitten may have been adopted & escaped its new home. It returned to familiar territory and found a place it wants to call home. If the adopting people don't feel they can keep the kitten inside, It may be put back into the kitten "adoption" pool.
