Yes, Jason is correct, check engine light = fail and that you can get the light turned off at auto zone for free. Now, resetting the light doesn't mean that you have fixed the problem nor does it mean your vehicle is guaranteed to now pass smog. The check engine light's sole purpose in life is to let the driver know of an emissions problem, so something in your emissions system is malfunctioning and that problem may cause your vehicle to fail the tailpipe test regardless of the light being off. I believe that's what the state law is if the check engine lights on and it won't pass. You can go to AutoZone and have them reset it and bring it in while it's off.
