So what are the statistics on shark bites? Last year I had a huge 8-9 ft shark swim up to me about a foots distance while I was a few years into the water. I'm not from Miami so I calmly too huge steps to get out whilst internally freaking out.

There are sometimes shark attacks but this is very rare the attack is fatal for the victim. You can find the list of fatal attacks there: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_shark_attacks_in_the_United_States Mostly one each year over all the USA, so it's really more likely you get killed by a car rather than a shark.
